Melanie Carlson is a third-year doctoral student in the School of Social Work at Michigan State University. She received her MSW from the University of Georgia (UGA) with a focus on community empowerment, program development, and non-profit management. Her BA is also from UGA with a double major in Film Studies and Sociology.
Her research interests encompass the phenomenon of gender-based violence and how structural barriers inhibit many survivors from living without violence and abuse, which disproportionately falls on those in marginalized populations. A particular focus is increasing access to services for survivors with poly-victimization and from an intersectional and anti-oppressive perspective.
