Paper to Practice
Evidence-based advocacy made simple.
Paper to Practice (P2P) is a video series with the goal to provide easily accessible information covering recently completed research projects. Reading the most up-to-date practice-related research can often be too time consuming and too technical for those providing direct services to survivors. By creating short-form videos to highlight research findings, we make it easier for the audience to learn and easier for the researcher to share their work.

Campus sexual culture varies across institutes of higher education and, when in states of institutional repair instead of courage, causes harm to survivors. In this season, we take a thorough look into campus sexual culture and the effects it has, as well as what we can do to create a more positive and supportive environment for survivors.
Dr. Sarah Prior discusses the understanding IHE’s and its students have on their own campus sexual culture, as well as what we can do to combat IHE’s inaction and move towards a state of institutional courage.

Hotlines provide immediate and anonymous access to resources and services that are imperative to survivors of trauma. In this season, we will learn about the benefits for both web and text based hotlines as well as the necessary training for each.
Dr. Carrie Moylan, Dr. Michelle Munro-Kramer, Kathleen Miller and Logan Forrester of MSU’s Center for Survivors discuss how to develop a hotline and how to navigate inappropriate chatter.

Economic abuse involves behaviors that control an individual’s ability to acquire, use, and maintain economic resources, thereby threatening their economic well-being. In this season, we will learn what economic abuse entails and about coerced debt, a specific type of economic abuse.
Dr. Adrienne Adams discusses how to identify when someone is experiencing economic abuse and recommendations for how advocates can best serve survivors facing this type of abuse.

In this season, we will be learning about the Sexual Assault Kit Backlog, a national scale problem of large stockpiles of sexual assault kits that never underwent DNA tested.
Dr. Rebecca Campbell and Dr. Katie Gregory discuss recommendations for how advocates can best serve survivors and how victim notification can support survivors’ well-being and promote justice.

Vicarious trauma is an inevitable challenge of being a crime victim advocate, but experiencing the negative effects of vicarious traumatization is treatable and preventable.
Dr. Apryl Pooley reviews the latest vicarious trauma research and interviews Lisa Tieszen, co-founder of the organizational health agency Resilience Works, to help promote the well-being of all crime victim advocates.

In this season, we’ll be exploring research on reproductive coercion, a form of intimate partner violence in which someone attempts to control aspects of their partner’s pregnancy or reproductive outcomes. Dr. Sara McGirr shares evidence related to crime victim advocacy.

Buchanan brings intersectional theory back to the basics, and shares practical examples, to help you meet your clients where they are. Alex Reeves (she/her) is the digital media manager for the Research Consortium on Gender-Based Violence (RCGV) and the Michigan Victims Advocacy Network (MiVAN). A 2023 graduate of Michigan State University with a degree in Arts and Humanities, Alex Reeves focuses on ensuring all the media produced by RCGV and MiVAN is accessible and trauma-informed. She specializes in video and audio editing, animation, and strategic marketing that amplifies vital resources and advocacy efforts across the state of Michigan.
