This fall a great many MSU faculty, students, staff, alumni and community members were horrified to hear that George Will was one of the commencement speakers. After his factually inaccurate and offensive comments about sexual assault on campus — and rape survivors in particular — many individuals and groups demanded that his invitation be rescinded. It was not, and some of our seniors did not feel able to attend their own commencement ceremonies as a result. In response, many of our RCGV faculty and students worked with others to create an “alternative to commencement” where these seniors could be celebrated and honored for their achievements. Forty faculty from around campus were on hand to join in this celebration and it was incredibly powerful and moving. It was an honor to be involved in such an important event!
